As John Romero's first jump back into the
fray of first-person shooter's since leaving ID Software & Ion Storm's first 3D
shooter ever, Daikatana has gained quite a bit of attention and you can bet many
will be keeping their eyes on this one. However, is all the press enough for gamers to go
past their curiosity and actually buy the game? With a story-driven, well-thought-out game
that includes more to make this a better game for the player than cute little graphics
tricks as it's claim to fame, Daikatana may find itself onto the best sellers list in no
time at all. However, even John Romero must know that interest in the now flooded
first-person shooter is starting to wane as more and more copy-cats try to cash in on a
previous success. Romero believes he's found the answer to this problem, though. Daikatana
will try to create an enthralling and engaging world for the single player game that not
only develops the storyline, but also adds realism and effect to the gameplay. The desired
result being that the player actually feels like their accomplishing something or moving
towards an end goal, instead just shooting everything in sight with no care or conscious.
Daikatana is still to come ready to deathmatch and multiplay, but definitely the focus
will be on the single player game. Gamer's that have been consistently playing
first-person shooter's should notice a trend focusing more on the single-player than
multi- (such as the case with Epic MegaGames' Unreal). Plain and simple there is
more a developer can do to improve the single player game right now than can be done to a
multiplayer game and still keep it practical. It is, however, also the easier route to
travel. Those who love the muliplayer frag-fest's, however, should not worry. Developers
are starting to look at producing multiplayer-only first-person shooter's.
In getting back to Daikatana, though, you play Hiro Miyamoto, a Japanese
sword-swinger who wields a magical daikatana that has the power of time travel.
With your companions, Mikiko Ebihara & Superfly Johnson, you travel through four time
periods each with their seperate and distinct environments, level design, monsters and
weapons. To add to the gameplay, a dialogue also takes place between you and your two
companions. This helps not only to give you hints and clues on certain things, but also to
further the storyline and give it a bit more depth. Throughout the game you will earn
experience which can be distributed to a number of skills such as Strength and Speed.
Developer John Romero is determined to make the absolute best single-player gaming
experience, but to also pay close detail and offer some new innovation in the multi-player
field. With graphics & detail to hold it's own even in the first-person market as well
as gameplay and a storyline like no other, Daikatana should be a major contender in the
first-person action genre.
